John Maltby originally trained as a sculptor, carving in clay and stone. He is influenced by Picasso, Alfred Wallis and Bernard Leach, and trained with David Leach. Since an illness in 1996, he has concentrated on small scale objects in clay, each piece evolving from the previous one. Kings and queens, life and death, and beasts and demons are reoccurring themes in his work.
